Common Myths About Puppy Biting… BUSTED! 🚫

So, you’ve probably heard some well-meaning advice about puppy biting, right?

Things like “just ignore it, they’ll grow out of it” or “squeal like a puppy when they bite”.

Well, let’s be honest… if those things actually worked, would puppy biting be the number one problem behavior reported by puppy parents? 🤔

Probably not!

Ignoring the biting just doesn’t cut it.

Imagine if puppy training was that easy! 😉

…and squealing?

Bless their hearts, but our puppies aren’t always going to understand our human squeals as “ouch, that hurt!” 😖

When puppies are with their mom and littermates, they learn bite inhibition through interaction.

If a puppy bites too hard during play, what does mama dog do?

Does she ignore it and hope for the best? Nope!

Mama dogs communicate clearly and effectively.

They might give a little growl, a nip, or move away to show the puppy “Hey, that’s too rough!”

We need to channel our inner mama dog (in a kind and loving way, of course! 🥰) to help our pups understand what’s acceptable and what’s not.

This is all about loving leadership, folks!

Okay, so how do we communicate effectively with our little bitey buddies?

It’s simpler than you might think!

My go-to method, and one that’s worked wonders for thousands of puppy parents, is “Correct, Redirect, Reinforce”.

It’s like a puppy biting magic formula! ✨

Here’s the breakdown:

1. Correct

  • When your puppy bites you (and it’s not gentle mouthing), we need to let them know, “Nope, not okay!”
  • This isn’t about being harsh, it’s about clear communication.
  • Think of it as a gentle but firm “No biting humans!” message. 🙅‍♀️

2. Redirect

  • Immediately after correcting, we want to guide them to something they can chew on.
  • This could be a toy, a chew bone, anything appropriate for puppy teeth!
  • We’re saying, “Chewing is great… just chew this instead!” ➡️🦴

3. Reinforce

  • When your puppy does chew on the right thing, shower them with praise, happy talk, and maybe even a little treat! 🎉
  • Let them know they’ve made a great choice!
  • “Yes! Chewing the toy! Good dog!”
  • This positive reinforcement is key! 👍

Let’s zoom in on the “correction” part, because this is where many puppy parents get a little unsure.

We’re aiming for an “active correction” – imitating that mama dog communication.

Now, I’m not suggesting you growl at your puppy! 😉

Instead, think of a short, sharp sound or action that startles them briefly and interrupts the biting.

It could be a firm “Ouch!”, a clap of your hands, or a quick movement away.

The goal is to say “No bite!” in puppy language.

It’s not about punishment, it’s about communication!

Remember Winston, my Labrador?

When he was a puppy, he had a teeny bit of a nipping phase (Labradors and their mouths, eh? 😅).

A firm “Ah-ah!” and a quick removal of my hand was usually enough for him to understand.

And trust me, he’s a super affectionate and well-behaved boy now! 🥰

Correction is only half the battle!

We need to give our puppies appropriate outlets for their chewing urges.

This is where redirection comes in!

Always have a toy handy!

As soon as you correct a bite, pop a toy in their mouth instead.

Make it exciting!

Wiggle it, make playful noises, encourage them to chew on that instead of you!

Think of it as a magical toy swap! ✨

Suddenly, your hand is boring, and the toy is the most amazing thing ever! 😂

Now for the fun part – reinforcement!

When your puppy chooses to chew on the toy instead of your fingers, celebrate!

Pile on the praise!

“Good chew!”, “Yes, toy!”, lots of happy petting and ear scratches!

Maybe even a tiny treat if you’re feeling generous! 😉

The more you reinforce the behavior you want, the more your puppy will do it!

It’s like saying, “Hey, this is what gets you the good stuff!”

And puppies, like Winston, are definitely motivated by “the good stuff” – especially if it involves food or belly rubs! 😂
