He was around two or three years old, already knew his manners, and had a gentle soul.
Brandon McMillan, the “Lucky Dog” himself, was on the lookout for a special dog… a dog with the potential to become a service dog for a veteran.

Meanwhile, in Bethesda, Maryland, Tim Donley, a 23-year-old Marine, was facing challenges of his own.
Serving in Afghanistan, Tim’s life changed in an instant when he was injured by an IED…
The explosion resulted in the loss of both his legs.
“When you go from being a very independent, strong, capable person to being completely helpless, it’s hard to accept,” Tim shared…

The Vet Check: Ears and All! 🩺
Before any training could begin, Sandy had to pass a physical exam…
Think of it as his military enlistment physical! 😉
Dr. Nardy gave Sandy a thorough check-up, and while Sandy was declared a “perfect specimen” aesthetically, there was a little hiccup… ear debris! 👂
Turns out, Sandy had a bit of an ear infection.
Nothing a little medication and weekly ear cleanings couldn’t fix! “No excuses, he has to pay attention,” joked Dr. Nardy, ensuring Sandy could hear commands loud and clear.
With a clean bill of health (ears aside!), Sandy was ready for duty!
Boot Camp Begins: More Than Just Sit and Stay 🐾
Sandy’s training wasn’t your average doggy obedience class…
Brandon needed to assess everything about Sandy – his physical abilities, his mental sharpness, and his psychological suitability for service work.
Golden Retrievers are known for being great service dogs, but Sandy still had to prove he had what it takes.

Since a dog’s natural instinct is to lie down when you lean on them, Brandon had to teach Sandy the opposite.
Using a training platform and a box, Brandon guided Sandy to stiffen his body when pressure was applied.

After twelve weeks of intensive training, it was test time!
Sandy had mastered the “retrieve” and “brace” commands, but could he perform under pressure?
Brandon created a challenging simulation, restricting his own mobility to mimic Tim’s challenges.
Sandy donned his official service dog harness… it was time.
He aced the retrieve test, picking up keys and a phone with ease.
Then came the stairs… a major hurdle for Tim.
