Bringing a new puppy home is SO exciting… all those cuddles, playful nips, and adorable puppy breath! 🥰

But let’s be real, potty training?

Not always a walk in the park…

Are you finding yourself constantly cleaning up little accidents?

Feeling like you’re taking your puppy outside every five minutes with no luck? …

You’re definitely not alone!

Countless pet parents go through the potty training struggle.

But guess what?

It doesn’t have to be a never-ending battle! 🎉

In this guide, we’re diving into simple yet super-effective hacks to potty train your puppy FAST…

… like, in just one week fast!

Yes, you heard that right.

In this article we review an excellent puppy potty training lesson from the knowledgeable Rachel Fusaro. You can find Rachel’s video at the bottom of the article.

Ready to ditch the puppy pads and say goodbye to indoor accidents?

Let’s jump right in! 🐾

Hack 1: The Golden Rule? Stay Outside Longer! 🌳

Okay, so you take your puppy outside, they pee… and then BAM!

Inside they go, and… pee again!

Sound familiar? 🤦‍♀️

Here’s a game-changing tip: when your puppy goes potty outside, don’t rush them back inside right away.

Seriously!

Little pups, especially those super cute, snuggly ones, are still learning to empty their bladders completely the first time.

Think of it like… they’re just learning! 😉

When you think they’re done, wait a bit longer…

Let them sniff around, explore a little more.

You might be surprised… they might just go again!

My own Labrador, Winston, even now at 3 years old, sometimes likes to have a second go!

He’s usually pretty well-behaved, but when it comes to emptying his bladder fully, he likes to take his time.

Give them that extra moment outside… it can make a HUGE difference!

Hack 2: Crate = Potty-Free Zone! 🚫

This one is crucial: never, ever let your puppy have accidents in their crate.

Why?

Because what you allow, you encourage… and we definitely don’t want to encourage crate potty breaks!

Think of the crate as their den, their safe space… and dogs naturally don’t want to potty where they sleep. …

Most of the time anyway! 😉

So, how do you prevent crate accidents?

It’s all about regular potty breaks… around the clock.

Yes, even overnight! I know, I know, it sounds exhausting… but trust me, it’s worth it in the long run.

The frequency depends on your puppy’s age and size.

For a little 10-pound pup like the one in the video, that might mean every 3-5 hours during the day, and every 2-4 hours overnight.

Set those alarms! ⏰

Hack 3: Nighttime Potty? Yes, Really! 😴

“Wake my sleeping puppy up to potty in the night?!” 🤯

Yep, that’s exactly what I’m saying! It might seem harsh, but it’s actually super kind in the long run.

Some puppies, especially young ones, won’t whine or bark to tell you they need to go… they’ll just go in their crate.

And then, they get used to it. … Not ideal!

Waking them gently every few hours, taking them outside for a quick potty break, and then right back to bed

It’s the secret sauce to preventing nighttime crate accidents.

And a smaller crate?

That helps too!

They’re less likely to potty in a space that’s just big enough for sleeping.

Think cozy den, not a palace! 🏰

Hack 4: Baby Gates are Your New Best Friend! 👶

Freedom of the house?

Not yet, puppy!

Until your furry friend is reliably potty trained, limit their access to your home.

Think baby gates, playpens… confine them to a smaller, easily supervised area, like a dining room or living room.

This way, you can keep a hawk-eye 👀 on them!

Why is this so important?

Because puppies learn FAST at this age!

Every accident inside reinforces the idea that, hey, indoors is a potty place. …

We want to teach them the opposite!

By keeping them close, you can spot those telltale potty signs – the sniffing, the circling – and whisk them outside ASAP.

Think of it as puppy management… for potty success! 🏆

Hack 5: Potty Break = Business Only! Playtime = Separate! 🎾

Here’s a common mistake: making potty breaks super fun playtime adventures.

While outdoor time is great, puppy needs to learn that potty breaks are for potty ONLY.

Otherwise, they might start faking potty needs just to get outside and play!

Clever pups! 😉

When you take them out for a potty break, be calm and focused.

Use a marker word like “yes!” when they go potty (like in the video!).

Reward with praise and maybe a small treat.

Then, straight back inside.

Playtime outside?

That’s a separate, exciting event! …

Confusing potty breaks with playtime can really slow down the training process.

Hack 6: Accidents Happen? Blame Yourself (Kindly!) 🪞

Puppy had an accident inside?

Resist the urge to scold or punish!

Seriously, punishment is a big NO-NO when it comes to potty training.

It just doesn’t work, and it can actually make things worse!

Puppies don’t have accidents to be naughty… they have accidents because they’re puppies!

Their bladders are tiny, their control is limited, and they’re still learning the rules. …

It’s all part of the process!

Instead of getting mad, ask yourself, “What could I have done differently?”

  • Were you watching closely enough?
  • Did you miss the potty cues?
  • Were the potty breaks frequent enough?

Accidents are learning opportunities for you, the pet parent.

Clean it up with an enzymatic cleaner (to zap those odors!), and move on. …

Tomorrow is a new potty training day! ✨

Hack 7: Crate Comfort = Potty Training Win! 🏠

Credit: @RachelFusaro

Last but definitely not least: make sure your puppy LOVES their crate!

Crate training isn’t just about preventing accidents; it’s about providing a safe, cozy den for your pup.

A puppy who feels secure and comfortable in their crate is a puppy who is much easier to potty train. …

It’s all connected!

Make it a positive space with comfy bedding, toys, and treats.

A happy crate = a happier, better-potty-trained puppy!

And who doesn’t want that?! 😊
