Secret to a Show-Stopping Maltese? Unleash Your Inner Groomer!

Please share with friends!

Alright, fellow dog devotees! 👋

Ever wondered if you could give your furry friend that fresh-from-the-groomer look without even leaving the house? 🤔

Well, you’re in for a treat!

We’re diving into the wonderful world of at-home dog grooming, specifically focusing on how to keep those adorable little Maltese looking their absolute best. 🐩

Whether you’re trying to save a few bucks 💰 or your pup prefers the comfort of their own home, stick around…

We’ve got all the tips and tricks you need to know! This comes from a very informative YouTube video called the @thewonderforest channel. Check out their video at the bottom of this article.

Let’s get started, shall we? 😊

First things first, just like us, our canine companions need a good bath to get squeaky clean! 🧼

Before you even think about picking up those clippers, it’s super important to make sure your dog’s coat is completely clean.

Imagine trying to cut hair that’s full of dirt and grime… not a pretty picture, right? 😅

So, grab your favorite dog-friendly shampoo and let’s get started.

You can use a shower attachment if you have one – those little hoses can be lifesavers! 🚿

Just make sure the water is nice and lukewarm – not too hot and not too cold.

You wouldn’t want to shock your furry pal!

Gently wet their fur all the way through, making sure to get even those super thick spots soaked.

Then, lather up with shampoo, giving them a good massage… they might even enjoy it! 😉

Finally, rinse thoroughly until all the suds are gone.

I like to give a little squeeze to their legs to get rid of excess water before wrapping them in a cozy towel.

Okay, your pup is clean and probably a little damp… now what?

Time for the drying session!

You can start by giving them a good rub down with a towel to soak up as much moisture as possible.

Then comes the not-so-favorite part for some dogs: the blow dryer. 😬

But don’t worry, you can make it a positive experience!

Use your regular hair dryer on a cool to warm setting – never use hot air as it can burn their delicate skin.

Gently blow-dry their fur, making sure to get all those nooks and crannies.

You might find, like my little buddy, that they have their own special way of finishing the job… like rubbing their face on the carpet! 😂

Hey, whatever works, right?

Now that your dog is clean and dry, it’s time to talk tools!

Having the right equipment can make all the difference in achieving that perfect groom.

Here are some essentials you might need:

  • A good brush: Find one your dog actually likes! Mine only tolerates one specific type. 🤷‍♀️
  • Dog clippers: I personally use the Andis ACG clippers.
  • Clipper blades: The standard blade is often a #10, but I prefer a 4FC (9.5mm) for a little more length.
  • Thinning shears: These are fantastic for blending and removing blunt lines.
  • Scissors: A basic pair from a grooming kit will do the trick for smaller areas.
  • A wide-tooth comb: Again, find one your dog is comfortable with.

You can usually find links to these tools online if you’re looking to build your own grooming kit. 😊

Alright, with your tools ready, let’s talk about clipping the body hair.

The golden rule here is to always go with the direction of the hair growth.

Never go against it, as this can result in an uneven and choppy look.

Start at the neck and work your way down their body.

I usually skip the head, legs (except very sparingly), and tail when using the clippers for the body.

My little guy prefers to sit during this process, which works for us, but it’s ideal if your dog can stand.

Just make sure you get underneath their belly too!

You might need to gently lift them to reach those areas.

Now for the more detailed work around the face!

This part requires scissors and a steady hand.

For the hair around the eyes, gently brush it forward and make a straight cut across.

Then, clean up any stray hairs and trim away any dirty bits that might be irritating their eyes.

It’s super important to make sure no hair is poking into their eyes.

Next up, the “mustache”!

Comb the hair forward, just like giving a person a haircut, and trim it, making sure it blends into the hair around their ears.

Do the same on the other side, trying to keep it even.

Remember, you can always take off more hair, but you can’t put it back! 😉

For the muzzle, I like to trim the hairs so they stick out just a little bit, and I make sure everything under the chin is even.

We’re almost there!

Now for the ears, paws, and tail.

The ears can be a bit tricky, and I admit, I don’t always get them perfect! 😅

Be extra gentle when handling and brushing their ears, as the skin is very thin.

Comb the hair straight and trim a little bit off the bottom, then try to shape around the ear.

For the paws, trim the hair around their feet to give them a nice, round appearance.

Don’t forget to carefully trim the hair between their toes and around their paw pads.

Finally, for the tail, brush it out and simply trim about an inch off the end.

You can then fluff it up and trim any stray pieces. And there you have it! Take a step back and admire your handiwork.

You can always go back and do a little more trimming if you see any spots you missed.

Sometimes, like with the ears, they might look a little funny at first but settle into place the next day. 🎉

So there you have it – a step-by-step guide to grooming your Maltese at home!

It might take a little practice, but with patience and the right tools, you can keep your furry friend looking and feeling their best.

Remember, the most important thing is that your dog is comfortable and happy throughout the process. 😊

Thanks for joining me on this grooming adventure!

Until next time, happy grooming! 🐾
