Please share with friends!

Ever wondered what it’s like to have a nose that’s thousands of times more powerful than yours?

Well, your dog knows! 🐶

Their sense of smell is absolutely incredible… and guess what?

You can tap into that amazing ability and have a blast doing it!

Scent detection games are not only super fun for your furry pal, but they’re also fantastic for mental stimulation and bonding.

Your video guide in this scenting adventure for your dog is Nate Schoemer (Nate’s video is about halfway down the page).

With years of experience working with dogs of all shapes and sizes, Nate believes that training should be fun, positive, and rewarding for both you and your furry best friend.

He’s the kind of trainer who breaks down complex skills into easy-to-follow steps, making it feel achievable for anyone to train their dog.

Let’s get started…

Why Scent Detection? It’s More Than Just a Game! 🤔

Scent detection might sound like serious business, like something only police dogs or search and rescue dogs do… but guess what?

It’s a brilliant activity for any dog!

It’s a fantastic way to mentally tire them out, and a tired dog is often a well-behaved and happy dog, right? 😉

Plus, it builds their confidence and strengthens the bond between you and your four-legged friend.

Think of it as a puzzle for their nose… and they get to solve it with you! 🎉

The First Step: Teaching the “Platform” Behavior 🚀

Before we dive into scents, we need to teach our dogs a little something called “fixed shaping”…

Don’t worry, it sounds fancier than it is!

Basically, we’re teaching them to perform a specific action

in this case, jumping onto a platform.

Think of it as step one in our scent detection adventure.

We’re going to use something like a sturdy, low platform – a step, a dog bed, or even a thick book can work.

Here’s how we do it:

  • Lure them onto the platform: At first, you might need to gently encourage your dog to jump onto the platform. You can use a treat to lure them up there.
  • Mark the moment: As soon as their paws are on the platform, use a marker word like “Yes!” or “Good!” or even a clicker if you use one. This marker tells them “that’s exactly what I wanted!”.
  • Reward! Immediately give them a tasty treat when they are on the platform. Yummy! 😋
  • Repeat, repeat, repeat: Keep practicing this, luring them up, marking, and rewarding. Soon, they’ll start to get the idea…

Introducing the Container: Something to Sniff! 👃

Once your dog is happily hopping onto the platform like a pro, it’s time to introduce something new… containers!

These are simply safe objects where we’ll eventually hide scents.

We want to get them used to investigating different things with their nose.

For this stage, grab a few different containers. Things like:

  • A cinder block (wrapped in duct tape to soften the edges!)
  • An empty bucket 🪣
  • A cardboard box with a hole cut in the top 📦

Why different containers?

Well, variety keeps things interesting for your dog and helps them generalize the skill.

Just like humans, dogs can get bored if things are too predictable!

Now, place one of the containers on the platform.

The goal?

To get your dog to investigate it with their nose!

At first, they might be curious about this new thing… or maybe not!

Patience is key here.

Here’s the process:

  • Wait and see: Let your dog approach the platform with the container. Don’t lure them this time. We want them to be curious! 🤔
  • Mark the sniff: The instant their nose goes towards or into the container, use your marker word (“Yes!”, “Good!”, “Free!”). Timing is everything here!
  • Reward generously: Treat them right away! Let them know that sniffing the container is the jackpot behavior! 💰
  • Keep it short and sweet: Training sessions should be fun and positive, especially in the beginning. A few minutes at a time is perfect.

Remember Winston, my black Labrador?

He’s usually super quick to learn new things, especially when food is involved!

But even for him, these initial steps took a little patience.

He was much more interested in the treats in my hand than the cinder block at first! 😂

But with a little persistence, he got it… and your dog will too!

Adding Variety: Different Containers, Same Game! 🔄

Once your dog is confidently sniffing the first container, it’s time to mix things up!

Introduce the other containers one by one.

This helps them understand that it’s not just about sniffing that specific cinder block, but about investigating any container we put on the platform.

Keep practicing with each new container, always marking and rewarding when they put their nose in to investigate.

You might find your dog picks it up faster with each new container… they’re learning how the game works!

Smart pups! 🎓

Duration is Key: Sniffing for Longer! ⏳

As your dog gets the hang of putting their nose in the containers, you can start to ask for a little more… duration!

Instead of marking the instant their nose touches the container, wait for a second or two longer before you mark and reward.

This teaches them that we want them to really investigate, not just a quick sniff and go.

But don’t push it too fast!

Success builds confidence, so keep those early durations short and gradually increase them as your dog progresses.

We want to keep it fun and engaging, right? 😉

Congratulations! 🎉

You’ve laid the foundation for scent detection!

Your dog now understands the platform behavior and is happily investigating different containers.

But guess what? The real fun is about to begin!

In the next step, we’ll introduce actual scents and teach your dog to find specific odors.

Get ready to unleash your dog’s amazing nose and embark on a scent detection adventure!
